Modern Irrigation — Not Old-Fashioned Ear Syringing

Many patients have heard of ear syringing and feel nervous about it — and understandably so. The old method used a metal syringe with uncontrolled water pressure, which carried real risks including infection and eardrum damage. That’s not what we do at Ear Rescue.

Modern ear irrigation uses a clinically approved electronic device that delivers a carefully controlled, gentle flow of water at body temperature. The water flows into the ear canal at a safe angle, dislodging and flushing out softer wax build-up without the risks associated with older techniques.

Irrigation is particularly effective for patients with soft, wet wax that responds well to water. Our practitioner will assess your ears thoroughly before recommending whether irrigation, microsuction, or a combination of both is right for you.

Wondering whether your symptoms point to a wax build-up in the first place? Our guide to what ear wax is and why it builds up covers the common causes and signs to watch for.

We recommend using olive oil ear drops for 3–5 days before your appointment to soften the wax and make irrigation more effective and comfortable.

How It Works

What Makes Ear Irrigation Safe and Effective

Body-Temperature Water

We use water carefully warmed to body temperature before every procedure. Water that is too cold or too hot can cause dizziness and discomfort — our controlled approach ensures a comfortable experience throughout.

Controlled Water Flow

Unlike old-style ear syringing, our electronic irrigation device delivers a precise, low-pressure flow of water at a carefully controlled angle. This dislodges wax gently without forcing water directly against the eardrum.

Examination Before Treatment

We always examine the ear canal and eardrum before beginning any treatment. Irrigation is not suitable for everyone — patients with a perforated eardrum, ear infection, or certain ear conditions are treated differently.

Softening the Wax First

For best results, we recommend using olive oil or clinically approved ear drops for several days before your appointment. Softened wax is significantly easier to flush away, making the procedure quicker and more comfortable.

Comfort Throughout

Ear irrigation should be a comfortable experience. You can pause or stop at any time, and our practitioner will check in with you throughout the procedure. Most patients describe the sensation as gentle and even satisfying.

Combined with Microsuction if Needed

For more stubborn or impacted wax, irrigation and microsuction are sometimes used together. Our practitioner will determine the best approach for your specific situation — your comfort and safety always come first.

Your Appointment

What to Expect at Your Irrigation Appointment

From arrival to aftercare, we make sure every step is clear, comfortable, and unhurried.

1

Ear examination

We begin by examining both ears with an otoscope. This lets us assess the wax, confirm irrigation is appropriate, and check the eardrum is intact before we begin.

2

Preparation and comfort check

We warm the water to body temperature, position you comfortably, and place a small receiver below the ear to catch the water as it flows out. We check you're happy and ready before starting.

3

Gentle irrigation

Using a controlled electronic irrigator, we flush warm water gently into the ear canal. The water flows in at a careful angle, dislodging and carrying the wax out. The procedure takes just a few minutes per ear.

4

Post-treatment examination

Once the irrigation is complete, we examine the ear again to confirm the wax has been cleared and the eardrum looks healthy. If any wax remains, we discuss whether a second pass or microsuction would help.

5

Aftercare guidance

Before you leave we share personalised advice on keeping your ears healthy — including whether ear drops would help prevent future build-up, and when to book your next check.

Before You Come In

Preparing for Your Irrigation Appointment

Use olive oil drops beforehand

We strongly recommend using olive oil or clinically approved ear drops twice daily for 3–5 days before your appointment. Softened wax is far easier to flush out, making the treatment faster and more comfortable.

Tell us about any ear history

If you have a history of perforated eardrum, ear surgery, grommets, or recurring ear infections, please let us know when booking. Irrigation may not be suitable and we may recommend microsuction instead.

Expect some temporary wateriness

After irrigation, it's normal for the ear to feel a little wet or watery for a short time. This settles quickly. We'll give you full aftercare guidance before you leave.

Immediate improvement in most cases

Most patients leave with noticeably clearer hearing immediately after treatment. If softening has been thorough and the wax is responsive, the results are often dramatic and instant.

Is It Right for You?

Who Is Ear Irrigation Suitable For?

Irrigation works best in certain situations. Our practitioner will always assess your ears before recommending the most appropriate treatment method.

Soft or wet wax build-up Muffled or reduced hearing Blocked ear feeling Olive oil drops used beforehand Intact eardrum confirmed No recent ear surgery No active ear infection

Irrigation is not suitable for patients with a perforated eardrum, ear infection, mastoid cavity, grommets, or certain types of ear surgery. We check for all of these before proceeding. If irrigation isn’t appropriate, microsuction is a safe alternative we offer in the same appointment.

FAQs

Ear Irrigation FAQs

No — modern ear irrigation is a much safer, more controlled procedure than traditional ear syringing. Old-style syringing used a metal syringe with uncontrolled pressure, which carried risks of eardrum damage. Modern irrigation uses an electronic device with precise, low-pressure water flow and body-temperature water.

Ear irrigation should be comfortable and painless. You may feel a slight sensation as the water flows in — many patients find it a relief. If you feel any discomfort, let us know and we’ll stop immediately.

We recommend it. Using olive oil or approved ear drops for 3–5 days before your appointment softens the wax significantly, making irrigation more effective and your appointment faster and more comfortable.

If some wax remains after irrigation, we may use microsuction to clear the rest. Our practitioner will always examine the ear after treatment and discuss the best next step with you.

There’s no restriction on flying after ear irrigation. Many patients actually find flying more comfortable once their ears are clear. If you have any concerns, speak to our practitioner at your appointment.
