Helping Children Hear Clearly — With Care and Patience

Ear wax build-up affects children just as it does adults — but it can be even harder to spot, and even more disruptive to a child’s development and learning. A child who can’t hear clearly may struggle at school, fall behind with reading and language, become frustrated or withdrawn, or be incorrectly assumed to have behavioural or learning difficulties when the real cause is simply blocked ears.

Despite this, children’s ear wax removal is an underserved area in private ear care. GPs rarely treat it and many clinics won’t see younger patients. At Ear Rescue, we believe every child deserves access to safe, expert ear care — and we’ve designed our children’s appointments from the ground up to be as gentle, reassuring, and child-friendly as possible.

Our practitioner has over 25 years of healthcare experience and understands how to put young patients at ease. We take as much time as we need — there’s no rush, no pressure, and you as a parent are welcome to stay with your child throughout the entire appointment.

We also offer home visit ear care if your child is more comfortable being treated at home.

Signs to Look For

How Ear Wax Affects Children Differently

Struggling at School

If your child is falling behind with listening tasks, reading, or following instructions in class, reduced hearing from wax build-up may be a contributing factor. It’s often among the first and most impactful places parents notice the difference.

Turning Up the Volume

A child who consistently turns the TV up loud, asks for things to be repeated, or doesn’t respond when called from another room may be experiencing reduced hearing — not inattention.

Frustration and Withdrawal

Children who can’t hear clearly often become frustrated when they miss conversations, feel left out, or struggle to follow group activities. This can be misread as a behavioural issue rather than a hearing one.

Tugging or Touching Their Ears

Young children often touch, pull, or rub at a blocked ear without being able to express what they’re feeling. This is frequently a sign of discomfort or a feeling of fullness that they can’t put into words.

Disturbed Sleep

Earache or a blocked feeling caused by wax build-up can disrupt a child’s sleep — and consequently their concentration, mood, and behaviour during the day. Treating the ears can have a surprisingly wide positive impact.

After Swimming or Colds

Wax build-up in children often becomes more noticeable after swimming or upper respiratory infections, as moisture and swelling can cause existing wax to impact more deeply. If symptoms appear after these events, an ear check is a sensible first step.

The Appointment

A Children's Ear Appointment at Ear Rescue

We’ve shaped our children’s appointments specifically around what younger patients — and their parents — need to feel comfortable and confident throughout.

1

A relaxed, unhurried welcome

We take time at the start to introduce ourselves to your child, explain what we’re going to do in simple, friendly language, and answer any questions they have. There’s no rushing — we want your child to feel safe before anything begins.

2

Gentle ear examination

We use a small otoscope to look inside your child’s ears. We explain everything we’re doing as we go, let them ask questions, and show them what we can see — often using our video camera so they can see their own ear on a screen, which children often find fascinating.

3

Treatment — only if needed and agreed

If wax removal is needed, we explain the process clearly to both you and your child before we begin. We use microsuction — a gentle suction method that uses no water and is generally very well tolerated by children. We check in throughout and stop immediately if your child asks us to.

4

Post-treatment check

After treatment we use the camera to show your child their clear ear canal — seeing the result for themselves is something most children find genuinely exciting. It’s also a great way to confirm the treatment was fully successful.

5

Advice for you as a parent

Before you leave we share practical advice on keeping your child’s ears healthy — including whether regular olive oil drops might help, what to avoid, and when to consider a follow-up check.

For Parents

What Parents Need to Know

What age can children be seen?

We see children aged 5 and above. Please call us before booking if your child is under 10 or has any additional needs, so we can make sure we plan the appointment in the right way for them.

Can I stay with my child during the appointment?

Absolutely — and we'd encourage it. Having a parent present makes most children feel significantly more comfortable. You can sit alongside your child, hold their hand, and be involved throughout the entire appointment.

Should I use ear drops beforehand?

If your child will tolerate it, using a couple of drops of olive oil in the ear for 2–3 days before the appointment can soften the wax and make removal easier. However, it's not essential — and if your child won't accept drops, that's absolutely fine. We work with what's there.

What if my child won't stay still?

This is something we're experienced in handling. We take our time, use distraction and explanation, and never force treatment. If your child is too anxious or unsettled on the day, we can stop and rearrange — there's no penalty and no pressure.

Symptoms in Children

Signs Your Child May Have Ear Wax Build-Up

Children often can't tell you their ears feel blocked. If your child is showing any of the following signs, an ear health check is a sensible first step.

Turning TV up louder than usual Not responding when called Asking for things to be repeated Touching or pulling at ears Struggling to follow instructions Falling behind at school Complaining of earache Visible wax in the ear

If your child has recently had a cold, been swimming, or started wearing in-ear headphones, and you’ve noticed a change in their hearing or behaviour since, wax build-up is a common and very treatable cause. A quick ear check can rule it in or out.

FAQs for Parents

Children's Ear Care FAQs

Yes — when carried out by an experienced practitioner, microsuction is safe and well-tolerated by children. It uses no water, causes no pain, and the procedure can be paused or stopped at any time. The key is taking the process slowly and ensuring the child feels comfortable and in control throughout.

GP examinations are often brief and may not always identify softer or deeper wax. If your child is still showing signs of hearing difficulty after a GP visit, a specialist ear examination using our equipment can give a much more detailed picture of what’s happening inside the ear canal.

Possibly. Other causes of reduced hearing in children include glue ear (fluid behind the eardrum), ear infections, or in rarer cases, structural issues. Our examination will help identify what’s present — and if we find something outside our scope, we’ll advise clearly on the appropriate next step, such as seeing your GP or a paediatric ENT specialist.

The most helpful thing is simply to talk to them about what to expect beforehand — that someone is going to look inside their ears with a small light, that it won’t hurt, and that you’ll be there the whole time. Framing it as something interesting rather than something scary tends to work well. We’ll take care of the rest when you arrive.

Our pricing is the same for children as for adults — a £20 consultation, £40 for one ear, or £60 for both ears. If we examine the ears and find no wax removal is needed, only the £20 consultation fee applies.
