About This Service

Good Ear Health Doesn't Stop at the Appointment

Many people seek ear wax removal and then wonder what to do next. How do they stop it happening again? Is it safe to use cotton buds? What should they do if their ears feel blocked again in a few weeks?

At Ear Rescue, we believe that patient education is just as important as the treatment itself. Before you leave your appointment, we take the time to talk you through everything you need to know about caring for your ears at home — in plain, straightforward language, without any jargon.

Our advice and aftercare guidance is fully personalised. We look at the type of wax you have, the shape of your ear canals, and your lifestyle, and tailor our recommendations specifically to you. Whether you need ear drops regularly, or your ears are naturally self-cleaning, we’ll give you a clear picture of what’s right for your situation.

We serve patients across Boston, Spalding, Sleaford, Skegness, Holbeach, Bourne, and all surrounding areas of Lincolnshire.

The Ear Care Advice We Provide

Ear Drop Guidance

We advise on which ear drops are appropriate for your situation, how often to use them, and the correct technique. Not all drops suit all ear types — we'll make sure you're using the right product safely and effectively.

What to Avoid

Cotton buds, ear candles, and DIY ear syringing are among the most common causes of ear damage. We explain clearly what to avoid and why — helping you protect your ear canals from harm in everyday life.

Swimmers & Active Patients

If you swim regularly or spend time in water, you may be at increased risk of ear infections or wax build-up. We provide targeted advice on protecting your ears and reducing moisture in the ear canal.

Hearing Aid Users

Hearing aids can contribute to wax build-up by disrupting the ear's natural self-cleaning process. We advise hearing aid wearers on how to manage this and how often to schedule maintenance appointments.

Preventing Future Build-Up

Some people naturally produce more wax than others, or have narrow ear canals that make them prone to blockages. We explain what's happening in your ears and give you a simple routine to help keep them clear.

When to Seek Help Again

We make sure you know the symptoms to watch for — sudden hearing loss, pain, dizziness, or a feeling of fullness that returns — so you know exactly when it's time to book a follow-up appointment.

After Your Appointment

What to Expect After Ear Wax Removal

It’s completely normal to notice some differences after treatment. Here’s what typically happens in the hours and days following your appointment.

1

Immediately after — enhanced hearing

Most patients notice an immediate improvement in their hearing. Sounds may feel louder or more vivid than expected — this is completely normal as your ears adjust to being unblocked.

2

First 24 hours — some sensitivity

Your ear canals may feel slightly tender or sensitive for a day or two. Avoid inserting anything into your ears and try to keep them dry. If you notice any significant pain or discharge, contact us.

3

Days 2–7 — settling in

Your ears should feel comfortable and clear. Some patients experience mild itchiness as the skin adjusts — resist the urge to scratch or insert anything into the canal.

4

Ongoing — following your personal advice

Use any ear drops or follow the aftercare plan we've discussed. Most patients benefit from a check-up every 6–12 months depending on how quickly their wax builds up.

When to Seek Help

Signs Your Ears Need Attention

You don't have to wait for a complete blockage before seeking advice. If you're experiencing any of the following, our team is here to help.

Blocked or muffled ears Reduced hearing Ringing or tinnitus Earache or discomfort Feeling of fullness Itching in the ear Dizziness or imbalance Wax visible in the ear

If you experience sudden hearing loss, severe pain, or any discharge from the ear, please seek medical attention promptly. In cases of uncertainty, our team can advise whether you need to see a GP or if we can help directly.

Common Questions

Aftercare FAQs

We recommend keeping your ears dry for at least 24 hours after treatment. When you do wash your hair, try to avoid getting water directly into the ear canal. A cotton wool ball placed gently at the entrance to the ear (not pushed in) can help protect it in the shower.

Yes, this is very common. After years of gradual build-up, your ears suddenly have full access to sound again. This can feel startling at first, but your brain will adjust quickly — usually within a day or two.

It varies from person to person. Some patients need a check-up every 6 months, others only once a year or less. We’ll give you a tailored recommendation based on how quickly your wax builds up and your personal history.

Not everyone needs to. A few drops of olive oil two or three times a week can help keep wax soft and easier to migrate naturally — but we’ll advise you on whether this is appropriate for your ear type during your appointment.

Occasionally, wax that couldn’t be fully removed in one session may shift and cause a temporary feeling of fullness. It can also be that your ears simply produce wax quickly. Contact us and we’ll assess whether a follow-up appointment is needed.
