Can You Still Get Ear Wax Removal Free on the NHS?

In theory, yes. In practice, for most people, no. Some GP surgeries still offer it, some refer patients on to audiology or ENT, and many simply advise patients to try ear drops and, if that fails, go private.

What Does Private Ear Wax Removal Cost?

Across the UK, private ear wax removal typically falls somewhere between £40 and £90 per appointment. That is a wide range, and the reasons for it are usually one or more of the following.

One Ear or Both?

Most clinics, including ours, price treatment per ear rather than per appointment. If you only have wax in one ear, you should not be paying the same as someone needing both treated. Always check whether the price you have been quoted covers one ear or both — it is one of the most common sources of confusion (and unpleasant surprises) when comparing providers.

The Method Used

As we cover in our guide to microsuction vs ear irrigation, both methods are safe and effective, but microsuction generally costs a little more. It requires more specialist equipment (a magnification device and a medical suction unit) and more extensive practitioner training, which is reflected in the price. Some clinics charge a flat rate regardless of method; others price microsuction slightly higher than irrigation.

Who Is Actually Treating You

This is the factor that gets talked about least, and it probably should not. Ear wax removal is offered by a wide range of providers with very different levels of training: audiologists, ENT nurses, registered nurses, pharmacists, and in some cases staff with a short course certificate and little clinical background beyond it. Price is not always a reliable indicator of who you are seeing or how experienced they are, so it is worth asking directly about the practitioner’s clinical qualifications rather than assuming a higher price means more expertise (or a lower one means less risk).

Home Visits

If you need a home visit rather than a clinic appointment, expect to pay more to cover the practitioner’s travel time and the cost of bringing portable equipment to you. It is still usually far more affordable than people expect, particularly when you weigh it against the cost and difficulty of arranging transport to a clinic if mobility is a genuine barrier.

Location

As with most private healthcare, prices in and around London and other major cities tend to run higher than in smaller towns and rural areas. In Lincolnshire and similar areas, you should generally expect to pay towards the lower-to-middle end of the national range.

What About Pharmacies and Opticians?

In the last few years, a number of high-street pharmacy chains and opticians have started offering ear wax removal, usually microsuction, as an add-on service. Prices here can look competitive at first glance, but it is worth checking a few things before booking:

• Whether the quoted price covers one ear or both
• Whether a proper ear examination is included, or whether you are simply booking a treatment slot
• What happens (and what you pay) if the practitioner finds there is actually very little wax, or the appointment needs to be extended
• Who is actually carrying out the procedure, and what their clinical background is
