Quick answer
An ear health check is a thorough professional examination of your ear canal and eardrum, usually using endoscopic (camera) technology, to assess wax levels, canal health and eardrum condition — even if you have no symptoms. It catches problems early, gives you a clear baseline, and helps decide whether treatment is actually needed.
Most people only think about their ears when something goes wrong — a blocked feeling, muffled hearing, an ache that will not settle. But by the time symptoms appear, wax has often been building up for weeks or months, and other changes in the ear canal may have gone unnoticed for far longer.
An ear health check flips that around. Rather than waiting for a problem to announce itself, it gives you (and us) a clear, up-to-date picture of what is actually happening inside your ears, whether or not you currently have any symptoms at all.
What Happens During an Ear Health Check
At Ear Rescue, every ear health check uses endoscopic examination — a small, high-definition camera that displays a magnified, real-time view of your ear canal and eardrum on a screen. Rather than being told what a clinician can see through a handheld otoscope, you see exactly what we see, in real time.
During the examination, we assess:
- The presence, quantity, position and consistency of any ear wax
- The condition of the skin lining the ear canal, looking for signs of irritation, inflammation or infection
- The health and appearance of the eardrum itself — whether it looks intact, retracted, or shows any signs of fluid behind it
- Any evidence of previous ear surgery, foreign objects, or other findings worth noting
The whole process is quick, comfortable and non-invasive. If wax is found and treatment is appropriate, we can usually carry it out in the same appointment.
Why Get a Check-Up If Your Ears Feel Fine?
This is the question we get asked most about this service, and it is a fair one. Here are the main reasons a routine check makes sense even without symptoms.
Wax Build-Up Is Often Silent Until It Isn’t
Hearing loss from wax build-up tends to happen so gradually that people simply adapt without realising it. Turning the television up a notch each month, asking people to repeat themselves a little more often — these changes are easy to dismiss individually, but a check-up can reveal a build-up that has been developing quietly for some time.
You Get a Baseline
If you are ever unlucky enough to develop a genuine ear problem in future, having a recent, healthy baseline examination on record makes it far easier for a clinician to identify what has actually changed.
It’s Reassurance, Properly Earned
Some people book a check purely for peace of mind, particularly if they are prone to ear problems, wear hearing aids, or are simply curious after reading about ear health. There is nothing wrong with wanting to know, rather than assume.
Who Benefits Most From Regular Ear Health Checks?
While anyone can benefit, some groups gain particularly from regular checks:
- Hearing aid users, whose devices accelerate wax build-up
- Older adults, as ear wax becomes drier and less mobile with age
- Anyone with naturally narrow ear canals or a history of recurring blockages
- People who use earphones frequently, which can push wax deeper and trap it
- Anyone who has never had a professional look inside their ears and would simply like to know their baseline
How Often Should You Have One?
There is no universal rule, but as a general guide, most people benefit from a check every twelve months, and those in higher-risk groups above may benefit from one every six months. We cover this in more detail in how often you should have ear wax removed, which explains the full picture of removal frequency alongside routine checks.
What If Nothing Is Found?
Then that is genuinely good news, and we will tell you exactly that. We never carry out unnecessary treatment. An ear health check with no significant findings is not a wasted appointment — it is confirmation that your ears are in good order, and a useful record for the future.
